This should be the first book you read when you attend RCIA for adults in the Catholic Church and for every person that needs explanation of what the Church is and why the Roman Catholic Church is not what I have called it for the last five decades ask as a non-catholic, and now that I am Catholic, still hard to believe, it is a true source book and a read that needs all of your attention. Great!
I plan to deliver a 16 week (32 hours) course on the Creed to the lay people in our diocese next year. This excellent book by Marthaler confirms my conviction that the course can be conducted in a very interesting way. Marthaler deals with both the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed in a comprehensive way which includes biblical, theological, liturgical, historical, social, cultural, and even psychological aspects. The book also discusses relevant topics pertaining to the Catholics such as Mary and the seven Sacraments. The bibliography at the end of each chapter is very helpful for those interested to explore further in a particular field. The side bar reference to Catechism of the Catholic Church is much welcome. Reading this book is an eye-opening experience. I come to appreciate the Creed more. The scope is broad and the presentation inspiring. I am so absorbed as to finish reading this thick book line by line in less than three weeks. Highly recommended. A final suggestion: at the end of the book, an index of biblical reference could be added as a bonus for Bible students like myself.
If you are Catholic and you are studying catechesis, this is a must have, to really learn what the Creed is. The book was an eyeopener, yet a lot to digest.
This book is for a class I am taking and it is well written and educational.
Both the Nicene Creed and the Apostle's Creed contain a summary of our Christian faith. This book provides an excellent guide to better understanding the creeds and our faith.
Although this item was listed as used, the seller gave the impression that the book was like new. It has a lot of ballpoint pen underlining throughout, which is disappointing but not too surprising since it is used as a textbook. Fr. Marthaler used it in a class I took from him 20+ years ago. It is a good reference, made better with his direct comments in the class.
Thorough and readable account of the historical context within which the creed was written, along with a fine commentary on how the believing community has trid to understand and apply it over the centuries.
